A set of sharp nails pierced the flesh above my boob, startling me awake as I screamed. The cat, hanging from my chest with one paw, swiped his other paw against my neck.

Without thinking, I grabbed him, ripping him off me, and threw him over the porch railing.

The cat landed on all fours before fleeing to hide behind the tire of Bernadette’s Nova.

“Damn,” I cursed, rubbing my chest before raising my hand to my neck. When I pulled my hand back, I saw a streak of blood smeared across my fingertips. “That cat is demonic.” I looked beside me, sensing Bernadette. “Why didn’t you pull me out of the trance?”

“I was going to follow you. See where Raina was taking you.” Bernadette wagged her finger toward Satan. “Bad, kitty. You ruined everything.”

The cat hissed, swiping the air in Bernadette’s direction.

Bernadette stepped back, glancing over at me. “Are you okay?”

“No, I’m not okay. Your cat attacked me.”

“Welcome to the club,” Bernadette said, snorting, before heading back inside.

“So much for grandmotherly concern,” I mumbled before following her indoors.

Bernadette stopped in the kitchen area, but I kept going, making my way back to the basement where I put my hair up before stepping into the shower to scrub the cat scratches clean. When I was done, I slipped on a robe and searched Bernadette’s bathroom cabinet for antibacterial cream to coat all the claw marks.

Back in my room again, I dressed in jeans and a clean shirt and found a pair of new, still-in-the-box running shoes in the closet, pulling them on. After lacing my shoes, I unplugged the alarm clock. The display read two forty-two before the screen blacked out.

I returned upstairs where Bernadette was perched on top of a barstool at the breakfast bar, eating a piled-high sandwich. She had a dollop of mayo stuck to the end of her chin.

“This morning I saw you using a napkin. If you know table manners, why are you such a slob when you eat?”

“My mother insisted on proper decorum, but since I hated my mother, I made sure to disappoint her often.” Bernadette grabbed a napkin, wiping the mayo off. “Now, it’s just a habit. A bad habit, I’ll admit, but I get a kick out of knowing my mother wouldn’t approve.”

Since her mother was crazy like Raina, Bernadette’s rebellion made sense. “I have a bunch of things to do yet today, so I’m heading out. Thanks for letting me sleep a few hours.”

“Don’t forget about tomorrow morning.”

“What about tomorrow?”

“We have a training lesson. Meet me at Nightshade Treasures at eight-thirty.”

Deciding I didn’t want to know more, I grabbed my purse and left. Stepping out onto the front porch, I saw the cat sitting in the middle of the drive, licking its paw.

“Don’t even think about it,” I warned him, pointing my finger his way.

He glanced at me, stood on all fours, and turned his butt toward me with his tail held high, prancing off toward the barn.

I jogged down the steps, hopped into the station wagon and closed the door, exhaling when I was safely inside.
